Sian Ifan Letter To Press:

Sir,

Interesting to note the issue in Carmarthen about a painting of General Piction in the town's Magistrates Court as being a cause of concern, I agree that it should be removed and would suggest that the space left by its removal be utilised to display a painting of local heroine Frances Evans of Newchurch who made a stand for justice in Carmarthen Work House on the 19th June 1843. I suggest this 'Welsh Marianne' as to be much more deserving of recognition than the brutal Picton.  No painting of Frances exists to date and I would suggest that the commissioning of such would be a very worthwhile project for, both, Carmarthen County Council and International Women’s Day Wales to pursue as a contribution to the day to 'Celebrate the Power of Women' and I can think of no other Welsh Women, other than Princess Gwenllian the 'Warrior Princess', so deserving of such ‘long overdue’ recognition in contemporary memorialisation.

FRANCES EVANS A WELSH HEROINE.

This post is dedicated to Frances Evans, Farm Servant and Single Mother of Newchurch near Carmarthen. We all too often forget to remember that as often as not Welsh Women stood alongside the men in struggles for social justice. Forgotten often due to fact that their names are not recorded and they remain anonymous participants in popular protests no less so than during the Rebecca Struggle. However, in the attack on Carmarthen Work House an 'Heroine' does force herself to the fore front of Welsh History, it was perhaps only for her '15 Minutes' of fame but nevertheless I believe for those heroic '15 minutes' when she stood upon a table in the work house and called upon the men to sack the hated institution into which social circumstance had placed her and many others. Frances was later to be captured with other rioters at Cilgwyn Uchaf, other rioters at Talog. After which Frances appears to disappear from history, though I am continuing my research into this fascinating young women, indeed a Welsh Heroine. I call for further recognition of Frances Evans, why not a statue for this our very own Marianne - 'Liberty at the at the Barricade'.

It is upon these very barricades that Liberty, the personification of freedom
(who the French callMarianne) stands. She holds the tri-color aloft.
